WINNIPEG AIRPORTS AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES SELF-DRIVING WHEELCHAIRS ON THE MOVE AT YWG Did you know? By 2038, it’s estimated that one in three people travelling by air will need some form of assistance. To help meet the evolving needs of passengers, and as part of its commitment to provide a more accessible and inclusive environment, Winnipeg Richardson International Airport recently became the first place in North America to implement WHILL’s self-driving wheelchairs as a fully available service.

At the push of a button, the autonomous mobility devices help travellers to move more freely from the check-in counters, through security, and to their departure gates, allowing for more independence. The ground-breaking technology, which was also developed through a series of trials at YWG, recently won an Innovation Award during the Consumer Technology Association’s Consumer Electronics Show. PRESIDENT AND OWNER OF CONTEMPORA STEEL AWARDED QUEEN ELIZABETH II PLATINUM JUBILEE MEDAL – George Constantinides, President and Owner of Contempora Steel Builders was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal last December at the Manitoba Legislative Building.

The Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal is awarded by the government of Manitoba to recognize and highlight those who, like Her Late Majesty, have committed themselves to the service of family, community and country. The medal was presented to George by Premier Heather Stefanson, Lieutenant Governor Anita Neville and MLA Obby Kahn.

CANADIAN ENTREPRENEURS’ NEEDS AND CHALLENGES: 2023 OUTLOOKBDC conducted a study last month among 1,500 Canadian small and medium sized entrepreneurs (SMEs) to find out their level of confidence in the economy, their business prospects and their investment plans for the next 12 months. Entitled “Canadian Entrepreneurs’ Needs and Challenges: 2023 Outlook”,  the study revealed that while most SMEs expect an economic downturn in the coming year, 45% do not fear for their profitability.

INVESTMENT IN ADVANCED COMPOSITES DEVELOPMENT CENTRE TO SUPPORT TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER, NEW LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTSRRC Polytech’s Technology Access Centre for Aerospace and Manufacturing (TACAM) was awarded $1.5 million in funding from Prairies Economic Development Canada, National Research Council Canada, Magellan Aerospace and Convergent Manufacturing Technologies to expand the Advanced Composites Development Centre (ACDC). The expansion of ACDC will enable RRC Polytech to increase capabilities in advanced composite manufacturing using robotics, automation, and data analytics. It will also help to industrialize emerging composite manufacturing technologies, improve RRC Polytech’s knowledge base, open doors for new business opportunities for the private sector, and develop a much-needed workforce in advanced manufacturing and aerospace.
