Not Just Hot Air: Manitoba Introduces the Captured Carbon Storage Act

TDS Law recently published an article by John Stefaniuk, K.C., highlighting the importance and effects of environmental law, real estate and development law, and natural resources and energy. John shares new developments regarding Manitoba’s new policy which aims to strengthen the province’s sustainability.

Manitoba is set to adopt The Captured Carbon Storage Act (CCSA), a significant legislative step that will clarify subsurface pore rights for carbon capture and storage (CCS) and attract investment in CCS technology. The new law, aligning with federal CO2 emission credits, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help achieve net-zero targets by 2050.

By leveraging Manitoba’s abundant hydroelectric power, the CCSA aims to position the province as a leader in CO2 management and innovation, driving significant investment in this crucial technology.

The Thompson Regional Airport Authority transaction is recognized for excellence in the infrastructure and project financing category. This year, Lexpert has named 22 deals in five categories (capital markets, infrastructure and project financing, insolvency and restructuring, mid-market deals and overall M&A deal of the year) as Excellence Awardees. These deals were picked from dozens of submissions sent by legal professionals across Canada. MLT Aikins, led by Winnipeg partner Michelle Redekopp, represented Thompson Regional Airport Authority in the infrastructure and project financing category.
