CPKC Certifies 14 New Site Ready Rail-Served Locations

In early 2026, CPKC certified 14 new Site Ready industrial development locations across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico, unlocking over 6,600 acres of rail-served, developable land. As the only Class I railroad that provides single-line service through each country in North America, this expansion supports CPKC’s “Room to Grow” strategy, offering manufacturers, logistics operators, and supply chain partners immediate access to shovel-ready sites, pre-certified for rapid deployment and streamlined development.

“Our goal is to connect North America by leveraging these land assets to build commerce and drive growth,” said Peiter Hjerstedt, CPKC Director of Business Development.

The 22 locations now available across CPKC’s tri-national network offer competitive, rail-enabled solutions for evolving supply chains and infrastructure needs. This includes the CentrePort Canada Rail Park just outside Winnipeg, Manitoba. Measuring 665 acres in size and at the crossroads of major transportation routes, this location makes it a key logistics hub.

Winnipeg in a New Light

Some transformations are more than a renovation. They are a reinvention.

Fairmont Winnipeg is embarking on a complete metamorphosis, one that honours our storied legacy while boldly reimagining our future. Fairmont Winnipeg will temporarily pause operations from July 1, 2026, reopening in summer 2027.

Inspired by Winnipeg’s soul and cultural depth, this comprehensive renewal will celebrate the city’s spirit and be felt from the moment of arrival. Guests can look forward to a new expression of design, where Winnipeg’s distinctive brutalist architecture harmonizes with guestrooms thoughtfully redesigned with prairie warmth woven into every detail, elevated event spaces that set the stage for the city’s most momentous events, and a new culinary and social destination that places Fairmont Winnipeg at the centre of the city’s cultural life.

This is not a renovation. It is a reinvention, grounded in place, crafted with intention, and designed to celebrate the spirit of this remarkable city.

We look forward to welcoming you back to experience Winnipeg in a new light.

While Fairmont Winnipeg is physically closed, we are still actively open to new business in 2027. Email Karen Bryk, Business Development & Community Relations, at karen.bryk@fairmont.com.

What Food and Beverage Manufacturers Need to Watch in 2026

Farm Credit Canada (FCC) has released its 2026 Food and Beverage Report, highlighting another year of uncertainty for Canada’s food and beverage manufacturing sector.

While sales are forecast to increase modestly in 2026, demand remains under pressure as sales volumes are expected to decline for a fourth consecutive year. The report also explores how global instability, shifting consumer demand and changing cost pressures are affecting manufacturers across the country. Despite ongoing challenges, easing input costs could provide some relief for parts of the sector.

The report offers insights to help food manufacturers, processors and industry stakeholders better understand market conditions and make informed business decisions.

DTTI Funding Injects Augmented Reality into Electric School Bus Conversion Project at RRC Polytech

Manitoba marked a milestone with the rollout of its first electric school bus converted from diesel at RRC Polytech’s Vehicle Technology and Energy Centre (VTEC), but an equally significant innovation emerged behind the scenes: the use of Augmented Reality (AR) to support and scale the electrification process. Through funding from the Digital Technology Transformation Initiative (DTTI), VTEC and industry partner Noble Northern used AR headsets and software to create interactive, real-time guidance for complex mechanical work. This replaces static manuals with immersive 3D instructions, helping reduce errors, accelerate training, improve knowledge retention, and enable remote collaboration. The project also builds a dynamic digital knowledge base that can evolve and scale across industries. Beyond environmental benefits, this initiative highlights how AR can transform workforce training and industrial processes, positioning RRC Polytech and its partners as leaders in digital innovation and sustainable technology development.

Major High-Performance 50,000 SF CFIA-Compliant Cold Storage Facility in Calgary Delivered for Lineage Logistics by Coldbox Builders

The City of Calgary now welcomes a major new addition to Canada’s cold chain infrastructure with the completion of a CFIA-compliant, 50,000 SF addition cold storage facility for Lineage Logistics, delivered by Coldbox Builders.

Strategically located near key north–south and east–west trade corridors, including the Trans-Canada Highway, the CPKC rail network, and Calgary International Airport’s cargo routes; the facility strengthens food distribution capacity across Canada, while supporting future growth in Western Canadian markets.

Coldbox Builders, the awarded design-build contractor, completed the project, including a new Blast Freezer and Cold Dock expansion designed to modernize critical infrastructure while maintaining uninterrupted day-to-day operations throughout construction. The facility adds 7,600 pallet positions, including 1,536 dedicated Quick-Freezing Rack (QFR) pallet positions. Its advanced Quick Freeze System uses high-pressure premium fans to create controlled airflow that uniformly pulls cold air through pallets, ensuring consistent freezing performance, increased throughput, and reduced total cost of ownership.

A high level of engineering and construction expertise was applied to ensure high-performance operations. The result is a modern CFIA-compliant cold storage facility that increases Lineage’s ability to scale operations, protect product quality, and support the future of efficient food distribution to markets and consumers across Canada.

The 12-point AI Checkup: A Practical Starting Point for Western Canadian Organizations

AI has moved from pilot projects to daily operations faster than most leadership teams anticipated. The question is no longer whether your organization uses AI – it is whether anyone is governing how it gets used.

Governments are starting to enact legislation targeting practices that use AI to discriminate against consumers and employees. Courts have already held organizations liable for the outputs of their AI tools. And the gap between what AI can do and what your policies account for is widening every quarter.

This article by MLT Aikins technology lawyers is intended as a practical starting point for organizations that know they need to get a handle on AI governance but are not sure where to begin.
